From out of cellars and shelters, basements and tunnels they emerged as their food supplies faltered. Rather risk the rads than starvation and after living in darkness for thirty years, none of their companions looked very appetizing. Eyes accustomed to subterranean gloom blinked to adjust to the unbearable glare of a single star breaking through the scorched clouds.
It gnawed its way out of the radioactive womb that imprisoned it for the last eleven months and turned a milky eye to the brave new world awaiting it. An exhausted mother lay panting on what passed for a clean table as a father looked on, shocked. "Look, Honey! It's... a... a... alive!"
The night winds bear the promise of fear and pheromones. Vibrations from scurrying rodent feet in the shell of the building below move up through your knuckles and arm as you crouch, listening. Scattering gravel as you leap to the metal ladder across the alleyway, you cringe at the thundering din. Scamper down the ladder to hit the fallen bricks below and start into a ground-covering comfortable lope. Extend claws, pull back lips to expose fangs, the thrill of the hunt running through your veins. Oldtimers shunned your "mutations", but where are they now? Dead of starvation, cancers and infections draining their lives, whining for blue skies and clean air, maladapted for the new reality. A hiss of joy escapes from behind your teeth as you round the corner to face your prey.
